Out in the Open
The last two weeks have been a brutal combination of anxiety and lies (or at least “willful omissions”), but everything is “official” now and I can finally announce:
I have a new job.
Starting shortly, I will be working for Covarity as a software developer. They’re a relatively small company (about 20 people) that provide a hosted solution for managing all of the tasks and workflow associated with loan and credit applications. They actually used to have their offices downstairs from D2L’s, but have since moved into a larger space a few blocks away (D2L’s since moved out of that space as well).
I’ve been pretty unhappy with my current job for a while now, and while I started casually looking for something new a couple months ago, I was a little nervous about actually applying to anything. As I got more frustrated I sort of ramped up my efforts and landed an interview with Covarity last Monday. That led to a follow-up interview on Friday, and an offer on Tuesday. The last two days have just involved sorting out paperwork.
I’m especially excited as a result of my conversations with their VP of R&D and lead developer (my two interviewers) where it became apparent that their views on software development and project management are a much better match to my own, and they’re actively doing some of the things I’ve wanted to try for some time. In particular, they use a variation of Scrum for running their projects rather than a more traditional “waterfall” approach, and I’m looking forward to getting to try it out.
I didn’t realize how depressed about work I’d gotten until I knew change was on the way and felt how much of a difference that made in my mood. Cressa has commented on how much happier I’ve been for the past couple days, and I suddenly find myself with a lot more patience than I had even just last week. I’m going to miss working with a lot of people from my current position, but I’ve needed this change for a long time.
Wow! That’s awesome. Congrats!!!
Congrats! BTW, is there a feed for this?
There should be a link down the side for “Entries RSS”… unless I’ve accidentally set that section up so that only I can see it
Regardless, the URL is http://www.uptoeleven.ca/blog/?feed=rss2
Congrats John! New careers are always exciting and scary at the same time. Best of luck on your new path.
